An easy holiday treat to make with kids:
We have not always had the best luck with neighbors. But we really lucked out this time! The boys asked if we could make cookies for everyone, and I thought that was a great idea. They have come to check in on us while Zach is traveling for work. They help me bring in the trash and recycling after pickup days. And they are always bringing us “just because” treats. So it’s about time we do the same!
These cake mix cookies are the best. It’s three ingredients: cake mix, eggs, and oil! And then you can add whatever makes your heart happy to customize them. Oreos are a staple around here, and H told me he wanted them to be “Christmassy” so we added peppermint chips. Prep time literally takes 5 minutes, which makes this super simple cookie recipe that much better.
Peppermint Oreo Cake Mix Cookies:
Ingredients:
- 1 bag vanilla cake mix
- 1 c Oreos, crushed
- 1 c peppermint baking chips
- 1/3 c vegetable oil
- 2 eggs
Directions:
- Mix together cake mix, vegetable oil, and eggs.
- Fold in crushed Oreo pieces and peppermint pieces.
- Chill dough for 1 hour.
- Preheat oven to 350, and bake for 8-10 minutes on a nonstick cookie sheet.
Spreading holiday joy
After we made our first round, H looked at me, aghast. “But mama, we don’t have any cookie delivery boxes!” Oh that sweet boy. So off to Walmart we went! Finding something reusable, yet festive was our goal. With our big move, budget was definitely in mind as well.
H found them first. “Oh mama, look how beautiful!” The TakeAlongs® holiday containers were out, and were perfect for this project. Not only would our cookies have hints of red and green holiday joy, but so would our cookie containers! These definitely fit the bill as the ideal way to give a little extra joy to those who have done so much for us, and asked nothing in return.
TakeAlongs® holiday containers:
There is so much to love about these TakeAlongs®. No matter your holiday color preference, there’s one for you. You can find them in red, green and gold, all at your local Walmart.
We are trying to be mindful about our disposable waste, so I love that TakeAlongs® are reusable. And not only that, but durable as well! Which means they’re great for this project of ours to deliver to neighbors. But they’d also make great containers for cookie swaps, or even just transporting your fresh baked home treats to all of your holiday parties.
Not making something sweet? No worries. TakeAlongs® come in many different sizes and shapes! We used some of our extras to take my homemade chili to friends, sides for a party we went to last week, and I can’t think of anything that wouldn’t fit. Plus, they’re translucent! Which may not seem like a big deal. Until you’re looking through the fridge and can’t remember what leftovers are where. So trust me, being able to still see through to your treats and food is a big deal around here.
Giving the gift of homemade:
The boys and I had so much fun making these peppermint Oreo cake mix cookies, we ended up making several batches. So more than just our neighbors received little homemade gifts of love from us! We shared these deliciously easy cookies with our delivery people – and made a sweet little basket for our front porch for them to take from! And H took some into school for his friends and teachers.
I love that this time of year has become so much more about giving than receiving for the boys. But judging by the looks on their faces, giving is just as rewarding for them as receiving.
Who would you send these along to in TakeAlongs® holiday containers?!
