Ok y’all. You know I love finding easy ways to do my part when it comes to waste. We’ve made some small changes that have had big impacts on the amount we throw out. Little changes, like reusable pouches, stainless steel straws, and shopping bulk have cut our trash down considerably. Between kids and work and everyday life, there’s always more we can do, but little time to do it.
That’s where the Hefty® EnergyBag® program comes in!
New to Idaho, Hefty® has introduced a ridiculously awesome initiative to collect what we once considered trash and convert that into valuable resources! The Hefty® EnergyBag® orange bags are allowing us to reduce tons of waste created by hard to recycle plastics. So now they’re out to be collected and turned into energy, instead of having to be trucked off to the dump.
Your hauler picks up the orange bags, along with your normal recycling during the time of your scheduled recycling pickup. They are then separated at our local materials recovery facility. The facility sends them to a local energy recovery facility and voila! Valuable energy resources!
Benefits of the Hefty® EnergyBag® program.
Not only is this an environmentally friendly option, but it’s easy too. Plus, think about the tons of plastic you’ll be helping save from landfills!
Saving plastic from the landfills means a few things. Hopefully, that starts with better efficiency in our current trash and recycling! And if it’s more efficient for waste management, then there’s the possibility of cost savings.
Finally, remember those valuable resources I mentioned earlier? With the Hefty® EnergyBag® program, waste is converted into alternative energy! Which means it can be used to power homes, cars and businesses.

Where can I buy Hefty® EnergyBag® orange bags?
If you’re in the Boise, Meridian, Eagle or Garden City area of Idaho, Hefty® EnergyBag® bags can be found at your local Albertsons stores.
The Hefty® EnergyBag® program in Boise.
The boys and I just picked up a few Hefty® EnergyBag® orange bags from Albertsons this week. We’re really excited to try them out! I think it’s incredible that we have this new option in addition to our existing recycling program. As a busy mom of two even busier boys, I’m really hoping it’s as easy to integrate into our everyday lives as it seems.
And don’t worry – I’ll definitely be reporting back! In a few weeks, I’ll go through every aspect and give you my bottom line. I am so curious to see the physical manifestation of this! When I think about all the #3-7 plastics we have to throw out… I’m just so happy we have this new option!
As well as we do with homemade and reusable containers, I have a feeling I’ll be aghast at the amount of wrappers. And I’m really curious to see if this has an impact on foods and snacks we continue to buy. Because it would be pretty wonderful to have such a simple way to make the world a little better place. Especially for those two sweet busy boys I mentioned earlier.
