I’m sharing Febreze in my life as part of a sponsored series for Socialstars™
A few weeks ago I went through and did a major purge of my closet. And when I shared the end result on my Instagram stories for you all, I had a TON of questions on the how and why. So, I’m going to share the biggest life hack that has been the most helpful for me. Because cleaning out my closet has always been this huge, looming task that just hangs over my head. And I hate staring at clothes, etc that I never wear. They just hang there – looking sad. Reminding me of their loneliness. And it’s about time to get them out of there, and onto someone else who will give them the time and attention they deserve!
Is it a little weird that I’m talking about my clothing like I talk about people? It’s fine. No shame here. My clothing is an extension of myself. They are pieces I pick everyday, to present myself to the world. So it only makes sense that I have a physical and emotional attachment to them!
Cleaning out your closet for Spring:
Think of your wedding dress. The dress you spent forever looking for. Just to find the perfect one. What is it doing now? I don’t know about you, but mine is hanging up in my garage. Still covered in dirt around the bottom edges from our wedding day. I can’t bring myself to get rid of it, and yet I don’t take the time to truly appreciate it. The same goes with so much in my closet! I have clothes from HIGH SCHOOL, you guys. HIGH SCHOOL. And some even still have the tags on them. It’s ridiculous.
I want to walk into my closet, and feel happy and calm. Not the chaos and overwhelm that I feel now. I know that capsule wardrobes are all over Pinterest and Instagram, but I haven’t been able to jump onboard quite yet. I don’t like that I’m constrained with what I’m allowed to have in a capsule. I want to be able to wear whatever strikes my mood for that day – sometimes its color, sometimes it’s neutrals. But whatever it is, I just want to feel good in it. Because isn’t that what our clothing should make us feel?
My first steps for cleaning out the closet:
First things first: I told myself to go through my closet and anything that didn’t make me feel happy, I put in a pile to the side. Now, I decided to go through my closet, rather quickly. And I didn’t have very much time, maybe 10 minutes. Which I actually think works better for this first step! Because it forced me to really go with my first reaction. Just doing this, I was able to purge a TON of stuff. Yay! I was already feeling lighter seeing those few empty spaces starting to peek through.
So what did I get rid of? Lots of OLD. Old tees and sleep things. Anything that had holes or stains. And a few surprising pieces that I had been holding onto for too long.
My BEST closet clean out tip:
Here’s the meat and potatoes of the closet cleanup. And it’s all about the HANGERS! No, you don’t have to go out and buy new hangers. Shoot, most of mine are from the thrift store (12 for $0.50… can’t beat that!)! Or from shops like Old Navy and Nordstrom that typically include hangers in the bag when checking out.
Take ALL your clothes, and flip the hanger around. So, instead of the loop of the hanger on your side, you are going to be turning it, and hooking it around the backside of your hanging bar. (See photos) When you’re done, all the hangers should be facing one way, opposite of normal.
I’m not going to lie, my type A self struggled a little with the visual aspect of this. But this closet cleanout strategy has been, hands down, the most beneficial for me.
So, once you have all your hangers turned backwards, get on with life as usual. BUT as you wear pieces and hang them back up – hang them up the correct way! So let’s say you wear a different top every day Monday through Sunday. After you hang things up, you should have seven hangers turned.
Spring cleaning your closet
Once you’ve turned the hangers, you’re all set! This only takes maybe 5 minutes of your time, is FREE to do, and doesn’t require any extras. I go through every couple of months and if it hasn’t been worn – it’s O-U-T. See all those lonely hangers on the bottom rack? Those are all from clothes that I was able to purge, in just a few minutes with this simple closet clean out technique.
This one simple step has legitimately revolutionized how I clean out my closet. Now, I don’t have to wonder when the last time I wore something was. Or struggle with what to keep or get rid of. By turning my hangers, I have taken all the guesswork out! And now there are no excuses. If it’s been six months and I havent worn it – bye bye. And into the donation box it goes. Having this practical tip in my wheelhouse has flipped a switch in my sentimental / once pack-rat ways. Seeing a physical manifestation of how often I wear or don’t wear something has just done wonders.
But the spring refresh doesn’t stop there!
Ya’ll know I love my Febreze ONE and the incredible ways that it’s helped me to get my act in gear, get organized, and work on some projects for my home. And Febreze ONE bamboo is the perfect way to refresh your closet for Spring. I like to pump the handle once to get a beautiful little spritz of motivating scent before I start. And then pump the handle three times to really refresh the entire walk in closet with a continuous spray. So not only is my closet streamlined, but it smells heavenly as well.
Why do I love Febreze ONE so much? Check out all my previous posts for the why!
There are no harsh chemicals or perfumes, no aerosols, and no dyes. Just a wonderful, light bamboo scent and a powerful mist that gently removes odors. And because we keep our shoes in our closet, its the perfect way to make sure there is no stinky shoe smell. This versatile spray helps keep my space free from lurking odors – whether it’s something in the air or on the fabrics. Febreze ONE is a powerhouse that I always keep in my home!

OMG!!!That is the best tip I have ever heard or seen. It just makes so much sense, I struggle all the time with our closet. Then the Frebree Febreze one is the perfect touch. I have not tried it yet but I did see a commercial for it today. With the gas smells on my husbands shoes I think this Febreze one will certainly come in handy. Can’t wait to try this Febreze one bamboo.

I Really do love the hanger TRICK!! IT’S a GREAt idea and will make it very obvious what you wear and don’t wear. So it will be easy to see the ones not being worn anymore. I’m going to so this tomoro after work because my closet is so full I can’t get over half of my clothes in it!! So as I clean out what’s in it I will add more to it and continue until I can get all of the clothes i do wear into the closet. Thank you so much for the help.

What an innovative idea. I’ve been TRYING to get my shopoholic haul hoarding friend declutter HER over-run home of mass merchandise (lots w tags still on and sitting for a long TIME…Really her home is it’s own little store in itself!) She over thinks every item and goes into a “bargaining stage with each item. This will help take away the chance to even think twice on this stuff. Plus febreeze in the AIR…Always a great motivator to breathe in. Thank you for the great idea!

A few years ago before I relaunched my website I used febreze to help air out the musty smell of our closet. I live in a two bedroom apartment so I am often having to purge sort and organize to keep my things neat and tidy. I have a hubby and two kids so it’s a chore for sure I love the tips shared here I am going to put some of them to use myself. My hubby and I invested in quality hangers and what a difference it has made. My clothes don’t keep falling off the floor now. I can keep everything hung up in place.

I go through my closet at the end of a season, take everything out and anything I didn’t wear that season does not go into storage, but right to a donation box. when that season comes again I buy 2 or 3 new pieces to replace what I got rid of. when that season ends again I do it again. when I do bag up things for storage I spray febreeze on everything so it doesn’t come out musty.
Shannon says
That’s so smart! I keep saving stuff and just leave it hanging all year, but I like the idea of making it more seasonal – it would be so much less clutter!
Tanya says
My closet is tiny & overflowing – great tips here. I have a lot of clothing that i used to wear when i went out & i think the memories keep me holding on to it. i have to update my wardrobe and get rid of the club clothes! lol
