Oatmeal Cookie Smoothie Recipe for Breastfeeding

- 1 banana
- 1 huge handful spinach
- 2 dates
- cinnamon
- 1 scoop Vanilla Protein Powder
- 1/3 c oats
- 1/2 c coconut milk
- 1/2 c water
- Ice
- Add all ingredients to blender, and blend.
- A dash of maple syrup is really good in this for a little extra added sweetness, as is a few butterscotch chips!
Not a banana fan? That’s ok! You can skip that part. I just love the creamy texture it gives.
To make this yummy green smoothie recipe for breastfeeding a *little* sweeter, you can always add a touch (like literally a teaspoon) of maple syrup, and / or you can always throw in a few butterscotch nibs. True story: a few nights ago I was hankering for sweets and in an attempt to be good, made this smoothie. I added a small handful of butterscotch bits and it felt like I was indulging in some fresh baked cookies. IT WAS AWESOME. However, since I’m currently making these in an attempts to lose some of the baby weight, I probably shouldn’t do that every time.Â
The good news is that this smoothie is loaded with good for you stuff. Even my husband, who normally is not a fan of my green smoothies, thinks it’s awesome. He even told me “wow, that tastes just like an oatmeal cookie” without prompting. So I’m calling this one a major win.
Why Green Smoothies are Great for Nursing
Because you are breastfeeding, you need certain extras throughout the day. That includes calories (yay!), to make up for what baby is taking from you. This Oatmeal Cookie Green Smoothie is chalk full of superfoods for breastfeeding!
Bananas
Bananas are a great source of Vitamin B6 and potassium. Potassium is key to help with electrolyte balance (which is a big deal when breastfeeding!), and also keeps blood pressure stable.
Spinach
Spinach is high in calcium as well as being an all around nutrient dense superfood. As are pretty much any dark leafy greens you can think of. Spinach is one of my favorites because it has a mild taste and blends really well into smoothies.
Dates
Dates are actually thought of as a possible galactagogue; a food that promotes or increases the flow of a mother’s milk. Additionally, they’re rich in calcium and high in fiber to help keep you regular. I ate them like crazy while pregnant, especially to prep my body for labor and delivery. Dates are also naturally sweet and like nature’s candy.
Oats
Oats are like the holy grail of foods for breastfeeding moms. They are high in fiber, and the whole grains will help keep you full. My midwife also loves that oats are high in iron, which is especially important for newly postpartum women and those who may be anemic.
