I am always on the hunt for fun, inexpensive things to do outside of the house with H. A few weeks ago, I started looking into different infant and toddler classes around the Boise area, and discovered Music Together.
Once I started looking into Music Together, I knew H would love the class. He is such a musical little dude, always breaking into dance whenever one of his favorite songs comes on, and he loves banging on his play drums, strumming his guitar with dad, and singing along to everything he can.
Not sure if your kiddo would enjoy Music Together? Or want to see what it’s like but don’t want to have to commit quite yet? One thing that I really like is that you can set up a free preview class! Another great aspect is that it’s actually affordable, our local classes average around $180 – $200 for a ten week program, and that includes more than just the weekly classes. I also received at home materials that included music CDs, Song Books, two instruments for H, as well as access to an online, parent only website that has digital versions of the songs you listen to in class and bonus activities you can do at home as well, so it’s a great value!
Music Together has classes in over 2500 communities available, and when I used their class finder I discovered that there was actually not one, but three locations available for us to attend a class! I chose the Music Together of Treasure Valley location, because it was close to downtown so we had a good excuse to have a lunch date afterwards. Setting up my free preview class was super easy! I just submitted my request via the “Demo Scheduler” on my local classes’ website, and the instructor emailed me shortly after to confirm. After we had our preview class set up, she also mailed me over a few hints for our first time visit to help make sure the class and our experience was a success, which I really appreciated.
As I said, I had no doubts that H would enjoy himself, but seeing everything in person and experiencing our first class was so much more fun, especially for me, than I had anticipated! The rest of our class was composed of other kiddos around H’s age, from probably about a year old to three years old, so it was fun to watch them all together. From the moment we entered the classroom, the instructor greeted us and the entire energy of the room was just buzzing with excitement. I thought it was adorable how they started class – instead of just going around in a circle and saying each of our names, they sing a song to say hello and welcome everyone, which immediately caught H’s interest.
Throughout the 45 minutes, the instructor went through about nine different songs, and just as many activities that corresponded with each one. Some songs we worked on playing instruments, others were more involved with movement to the slowing or quickening of the music, and we also did a little chanting and a whole lot of singing. Literally every minute of the class session was full of interactive fun!
I think what makes this class so different is that the parents are hugely involved. We are encouraged to stomp and clap right along side (or in my case right under, as H is a big fan of lap-sitting) our children, and we used our voices and bodies all together to create a completely interactive experience. I don’t remember the last time I’ve seen H laugh and giggle as much as he did during the Music Together class, and even my cheeks hurt afterwards from how much fun I was having, right along side of him.
It’s so easy to forget that music can play a hugely beneficial role in our children’s development (want more information on the benefits of music for babies, infants and toddlers? Click here!), because its so much fun, and definitely doesn’t feel like work, but seeing H in the Music Together class confirmed just that. Its been about a week now since we visited the class, but H is still stomping around to the beats we learned in class, and is translating that to the music he hears in our every day, and he is also, remarkably so, patting along with everything, right on beat.
A big thank you to the Myers Music Studio, Music Together of Treasure Valley, and the Mom’s Meet program for allowing us to come for a complimentary visit and giving us such a wonderful experience!
Have you ever considered taking a music class with your child? I highly recommend Music Together!

My son loved music (still does). When he was about 4 1/2 we were at this music store. He took this little guitar off the wall and got up on this stage (where they displayed the drums), And in his cowboy boots and oversized cowboy hat he starts strumming the guitar and singing "Rolling On the River." Everyone in the store stopped to watch him dancing around the stage for the WHOLE song.

My kids were obsessed with music from a very young age. They get it from their dad. My youngest started learning to play guitar at 4. Music and the arts are so important to be a well rounded person.

That's so cute, kids are always interested in music but there are few classes that cater to teaching the toddlers how to use different instruments. This is really nice!
