How to Make Toddler Approved Smoothies the Easy Way
If you follow me on Instagram, you know that H hasn’t always been the best eater and that is where toddler approved green smoothies have come into play.Â
At our recent 15 month checkup, his pediatrician asked me to really start pushing solids. He said at this age, H needs to be nursing less and eating more ‘real’ food. While he has gotten so so so much better (seriously though, it was like a light went off the next day and he decided he did, in fact, like to eat), I have found that if I make a smoothie, he’ll run off with it and suck it down by the time I find him hiding in the laundry room corner.
I started using my Nutribullet (my favorite of all 4 of my blenders) to make him a giant batch of a fruit and veggie smoothie in the morning and refill his Nuby No Spillâ„¢ Two Handle Super Straw Grip N Sip™ as he finishes them throughout the day! This Nuby No Spill so far is my favorite cup for him to drink the toddler approved green smoothies out of for many reasons, one of which because it’s super easy for his little hands to hold onto as he zombie walk / runs all over the place because of the handles.Â
Nuby No Spill Two Handle Super Straw Grip N Sip Cup:
I was attempting to put the smoothies into his CamelBak, but it kept leaking and was really hard to clean afterwards. With this Nuby No Spill sippy cup, we haven’t had a single leak so far (even with Hulk bebé catapulting it across the room / yard / park) and cleanup is really simple: all I do is unscrew the lid, separate the top and pop out the straw and throw it in the dishwasher or rinse it under hot water with a little dish soap and let it air dry.
Because of the Touch-Flo straw, the smoothie won’t come out of the straw until he brings it to his mouth, so I am comfortable giving him his No Spill cup even when he’s in a white tee or in his car seat!
When we go out to eat, H has always loved to grab onto the straws in our cups and attempt to drink from them, but the water typically ends up everywhere. This is a great “step 3” cup to encourage your little’s natural drinking action and oral development and transition into true straw drinking, and in the last couple of weeks he still gets a little backwash into the cup and overflow when he’s exploring our drinks, but straw drinking has started to really improve!

His favorite toddler approved green smoothies
You’ll notice all of the toddler approved green smoothies have a base of avocado (for good fats) and banana (because they are awesome for his developing digestive system and help naturally sweeten the flavor). Plus, H was most likely a monkey in his past life as he’s kind of obsessed with the things. Many recipes will suggest to add whole or 2% milk as a base for kiddos, but we’re still staying away from cow’s milk products because of H’s intolerance, so I stick with water or coconut milk.Â

Green Smoothie Ingredients:
For those of you wondering how much of each I use, it’s honestly mostly eyeballing it at this point. However, here are my general guidelines for a recipe for one of these toddler friendly green smoothies:
- 1 – 1.5 cups liquid (depending on how thick you like it)
- 1 cup greens (which is about equal to a handful)
- 2 cups fruit and veggies.
- For a ratio: I usually do about 1 cup fruit to 1 cup veggies.
- If I add peanut butter or coconut oil, it’s 1-2tbs.
- If I add cinnamon, chia seeds, ginger, etc, I usually start with 1 tsp. Then add more if I feel like it!

Very neat combinations. I haven't had a smoothie with avocado before, it is something I'm going to try in the near future. 🙂
Thank you Felecia! The avocado is tasteless, but adds a little more healthy fats and makes it more creamy!
Im new to this. In all of these recipes do you add milk, yougurt or milk to them?
Hi Shelly!
It depends, sometimes I use water, sometimes coconut milk or regular milk, and sometimes a little juice – the best part about these smoothies is that they are really customizable to food sensitivities and your toddler’s tastes!
My son couldnt do cows milk for a while, so most of these were made with coconut milk or water, but now we used 1%/2%/Whole milk as well, it all just depends on what we have in the fridge.
I hope that helps 🙂
If not, please let me know, I’m happy to answer any questions you have!
YUM! These are so delicious. I have to make for my sons:)
I hope they love them!
Oh I love all these different flavors! My kids will love them too. Thanks for sharing on Weekend Bites
Thank you so much Adelina!
Never before taking Green energy drinks. I felt such immediate cleansing and calming. I can't even imagine how great I'll feel after months of use. So thankful I found this product. I cannot say enough good things about it.
I love the ideas and would love to try these smoothies. Where can I find the quantities?
Hi there! I'm so sorry, I didn't realize I didn't include amounts! I will go and update it now! For my recipe, I usually do a general guideline of:
1 – 1.5 cup liquid (depending on how thick you like it)
1 cup greens
2 cups fruit and veggies. (Usually 1 – 2 cups fruit / .5 – 1 cup veggies, just to make it equal 2 cups. So, if I do 1.5 cups fruit, then I do .5 cups veggies)
If I add cinnamon, chia seeds, ginger, etc, then I usually start with 1tbs of that extra, then add more if I feel like it!
Can you tell me the amounts you used. They sound awesome. My kid I swear to you eats NOTHING. I mean that in the most serious way, but will drink whatever I give him. Of course he only gets squeezies, milk and water but I need to do something new.

Bobbie! My son as well. I'm lucky to get a few rice crackers and some applesauce into him. I would also love to see some measurements. I went to the grocery store this morning and bought everything needed. I just don't want to mess them up!

Do you just use water for the liquid?

I can't wait to try these, not only for my little one but for me as well!!
Wondering if you freeze your fruits or not for these recipies?
Hi Tawny! I use whatever is cheap and accessible, which usually means frozen fruit 🙂 The frozen fruit helps give it more of a smoothie texture that my sons seem to enjoy, without having to add too much extra ice that might water it down. But fresh or frozen are fine!
Hi! Would you allow me to link this from one of my blog posts regarding picky eaters? I love it!
That is totally fine! Thank you for asking, Andrea! I’d love to see the post when it’s done 🙂
