5 (toddler approved) 'green' smoothies for Fall

Take advantage of Fall's in-season fruit and veggie harvests to create deliciously healthy smoothies that the whole family will enjoy!

Green Pumpkin Spice Smoothie
  • 1 cup Coconut Milk
  • 1/2 cup Pumpkin puree
  • 1 Banana
  • 1 cup spinach
  • 1/4 tsp Cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp pumpkin pie spice

Green Apple Pie Smoothie
  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • 1 apple
  • 1 handfull spinach
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tbs flax seeds

Carrot Cake Smoothie:
  • 1 cup vanilla coconut milk (or use 1 cup regular coconut milk and about 1/2 tsp vanilla)
  • 2 whole carrots (peeled)
  • 1/2 banana (I use frozen)
  • 2 tbs oats
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon

Green Cider Berry Smoothie: (with this one, you may need to add a little more cider [or water if you prefer] if yours comes out too thick)
  • 1.5 cups apple cider
  • 1 cup frozen berries
  • 1 cup spinach

Oatmeal Pear Breakfast Smoothie:
  • 1/2 cup milk (I use coconut milk, but you can use any)
  • 1/4 cup plain vanilla yogurt (I use greek for the extra protein)
  • 1 apple
  • 1 pear
  • 1/4 cup quick oats
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ginger (I use freshly grated, so if you use a dry spice, you may need to adjust this)

Other add-ins to boost the benefits for yourself and your little one:
  • Chia Seeds
  • Flax Seeds
  • Coconut Oil

After I blend them all up, I fill up all of H's reusable food pouches and stick about half of them in the freezer. Don't get me wrong, we still occasionally buy him pouches from Target and Amazon because they are awesome on days when adult-ing is hard and / or H has started refusing foods again, but I love being able to make him fresh purees and smoothies so I can control the ingredients - and I don't have to worry about any recalls happening. Plus, have you seen how tiny some of the pouches are now? And they're still almost $2 for a crazy small amount of food that H can suck down in .2 seconds flat, and then he's left begging me for 'mo poush? Pees! Mo poush!".

I also think making these at home is kind of a fun thing to do together with H. I let him throw the ingredients into the NutriBullet after I've chopped them up, and sometimes, when he takes a break from smashing and throwing all of the things, he'll sit still long enough to help me hold the reusable food pouch while I pour in the smoothie / puree.

We normally stick to Nuby's Wash or Toss Straw Cups when I make him smoothies at home, because H loves them, but I prefer pouches for when we're on the go, as in my opinion, they are so much easier. I can throw them in my purse or diaper bag and I don't have to worry about anything leaking, and I can take multiple pouches with me if I know we're going to be out for a while.

We used to have another set of awesome reusable food pouches that I bought about a year ago, but unfortunately, I left several in the trunk of our very hot car this summer and didn't discover my mistake for over a week. I knew I had gotten my money's worth at that point, so I made the executive decision to toss the forlorn pouches out and grab some new ones off Amazon (thank you super speedy free Prime shipping!). Our previous set had the spout on the side, which I had a love / hate relationship with, so this time, I decided to try out a reusable pouch that was more like the Happy Baby / Happy Tot and Plum pouches that we usually grab and that had the spout on top. I thought all of the color choices of these reusable food pouches from Basics Best were super cute, and since H is currently obsessed with 'apple' 'ohnge' and 'sawbeyyi' that the 6 oz 'balloon' ones would be perfect for him. They are really really easy to use and refill, and the bottom zipper hasn't let me down yet - even after multiple freeze and thaw cycles. All I do when H is done with his pouch is rinse it out in the sink and slide it over a few of the rungs on the top shelf of my dishwasher, and I'm good to go.

What one of these would you try first?

Disclaimer: I did receive one or more of the aforementioned products for free in hopes that I would mention it in my blog, and this post contains affiliate links. Regardless, all opinions are my own and I only ever recommend products that I truly use and enjoy.
