Happy day after 4th of July to my American readers!
In my humble opinion, there are a few things that can make or break a great get together:
1. Lawn Games: I am obsessed with Ladderball and Bags, and some good ole fashioned competition can do wonders for getting people to mix and mingle.
5. Good music: If you have Amazon Prime and haven’t taken advantage of their new Prime Music you are cheating yourself out of the best (in my humble opinion) ‘free’ music streamer out there. Unlike Spotify or Pandora, there are no ads (so many high fives to this), unlimited skips, and you can select the exact song you want to play – not just a radio station with similar songs based on the one you want to hear, and you can download songs from the Prime Music catalog to your personal device for offline playback for those times when you dont have an internet connection!!! Other great things? The music they select and play for you continues to get better as you give them feedback on each song with a thumbs up or thumbs down. There are over a million songs to choose from and add to any personalized playlist you want to create, or you can listen to any of the hundreds of pre-made playlists Amazon offers as well.
Not a member of Amazon prime yet? Try a 30 day free trial of Amazon Prime, or Amazon offers a six month free trial of Amazon Prime for college students and get all the benefits of two day shipping, free streaming music, movies and TV shows, and so many more exclusive deals and coupons!)
What are your key things for a great backyard get-together?

We had family over for a cookout. Lots of fun with lots of ice in my drink. Like my drinks ice cold. I've haven't heard of chilling sticks. That would be good idea for keeping your drinks cold but not watered down. Thanks for the great tips!

Great post with terrific ideas! We love to hang out with family, catch a massive fish, have a fish fry in light off massive fireworks!

My bbq must haves are lemonade, grilled veggies, especially peppers, a nice piece of meat and a refreshing desert such as strawberry shortcake or frozen yogurt.

We bought some poppers for my son to play with, and some sparklers, not sure if we will let him do one or just show it to him.
My new favorite thing for BBQ's and anything outside is the Yeti cup I received from my mother in law. It keeps ice, ice for a lot longer than normal (I'm talking hours).

I love a good summer barbecue! No reason to waste the great weather by not having a party outside!
